CANUK SPRING BALL 2020 UNMASKING THE TABOO OF MENTAL HEALTH WITHIN THE NIGERIAN COMMUNITY
The Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK) will be hosting its annual Spring Ball on Friday 1st of May 2020 at Regency Banqueting Suite, 113 Bruce Grove, N17 6UR, Tottenham. The special event is in support of CANUK’s ongoing effort to reach out to the Nigerian community to educate them about topical issues. The event is expected to attract up to 450 people comprising of member organisations and other members of the community.
Background to CANUK
CANUK was established in 2005 in collaboration with the Nigeria High commission in U.K. To cater for the welfare and community interests of Nigerians resident in the U.K. Also, to serve as a common forum for coordinating the activities of the various Nigerian organisations by promoting good relations with the Nigerian High Commission as well as other U.K. authorities. CANUK aims to mobilise and co-ordinate Nigerians in the U.K. by enhancing public enlightenment, community values, culture, youth activities and other socio-welfare matters;

Mental health Issues refer to a wide range of mental health conditions that affect the mood, thinking and behaviour e.g. depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviours. Many people have mental health concerns from time to time and this becomes an illness when ongoing signs and symptoms causes frequent stress and affect the ability to function.
How big a problem is mental illness in our community?
Mental illness is common and about 1 in 5 adults has a mental illness in any given year. The statistics amongst the Afro-Caribbean communities is particularly concerning.
• The risk of psychosis in Afro-Caribbean groups is estimated to be nearly seven times higher than in the white population.
• Afro-Caribbean men were reported to have the highest rates of drug use and drug dependency than other groups. • Suicide rates are higher among young men of Afro Caribbean origin than among their white British counterparts
What are the reasons for these dire statistics?
The reasons for these dire statistics may be attributed to factors such as:
• Racism, discrimination, Social and economic inequalities
• Mental health stigma that prevents people from seeking help
• Criminal justice system What are the effects of mental illness and how can one prevent it? Mental illness is a leading cause of disability. Untreated mental illness can cause severe emotional, behavioural and physical health problems. Complications sometimes linked to mental illness include:
• Unhappiness and decreased enjoyment of life
• Legal and financial problems
